ABOUT

In April 2022 I couldn't fight that travel bug any longer, jumped through all the bureaucratic hoops, and bought a flight ticket to Thailand.

Exploring and immersing myself into other cultures and lifestyles has long been my passion. First it was Europe. In 1996 I immigrated from Germany to Vancouver Island in Canada where I still reside. In 2010 I discovered Asia, mostly China, where I spent about 18 months over the next 12 years. Learning Mandarin opened the door to a much deeper understanding of the country and to closer connections with locals. You can check out my other blog, Adventure China, if you are interested in this—for now interrupted—journey.

Traveling has always been part, never an escape, of my everyday life. To some, I might be a pretty boring person: not into watersports and swimming, not into partying, not a foodie, not into lying on a beach or simply relaxing at a resort. So, what does an introvert like me DO in Thailand of all places?

In Bangkok, I got my big-city fix. I was missing the pulse of a metropolis, its noises, its smells, its sounds, the honking, the endless surprises, getting lost and still always finding back, street vendors, crowded public transportation, mega malls, unfamiliar lifestyles, unique architecture, the chaos…

The moment I arrived in Prachuap Khiri Khan, as small town in the south, I felt a sense of belonging that I haven't experienced elsewhere. More about that later on the Prachuap page. There are endless beaches, monkey mountain, a dusky leaf monkey sanctuary, a daily night market, and temples (of course). And I went paragliding—a highlight I'll never forget!

Hua Hin didn't have all that much to discover and explore. I'm always taking a few work projects with me and needed to focus on that for a few days, so the lack of distraction got my software changes released quickly.

As a side trip from China, I spent a week in Chiang Mai in 2013. How much would I still recognize, how much has changed? I also wanted to research some options for a longer stay in Thailand and reached out to digital nomad and other expat groups. But—as sometimes happens—an incident messed up my best laid plans. So, it was a bit of a different story to share.
